Obituary

Roger D. Knapp, 86, of Alton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.

Born in Sodus, Roger was the son of the late Harlow Knapp and Pearl Brown Knapp. He married his high school sweetheart R. Joann Virts. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. She was his world. Roger was a hardworking man throughout his life, beginning his career as a truck driver for Hanson Quarry in Sodus before going on to be the proud owner and operator of Knapp Apple Farms in Sodus.

Roger was a father with a heart of gold who would do anything for his kids. He gave them his time, made memories with them, and found ways to make life special. To Roger, those moments were worth more than money could ever buy.

Roger loved to laugh, joke and have a good time. His interests included hunting, motocross racing, dirt racing, and vacationing in Cancun. Roger was very proud of his grandchildren. He took great pride in watching/attending their many sporting events. Without question, Roger and Joann (Joey and Pa) have been two of their biggest supporters.

Roger leaves behind a legacy of hard work, strength, laughter, and, most importantly, love. He will be remembered for his tough-as-nails nature, his big heart, his straightforward ways, and the unwavering devotion he had to his wife and family.

Roger was predeceased by his twin daughters, Faith and Joy, his sisters, Betty Buckley and Marjorie Riggs, and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Knapp.

He is survived by his loving wife R. Joann of Alton, children, Debby (Michael) Burlee of Williamson, Stephen (Ginger) Knapp of Williamson, and Donald (Michelle) Knapp of Sodus; his brother, Willard Knapp of Wolcott; his sister, Nancy (James) Downey of Castile; his cherished grandchildren, Samantha (Gabe), Ashley (Tim), Chad (Marissa), Caleb (Katie), Beau, and Donnie (Micayla); as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
